Mugai-ryu Iaido dojo

The New Zealand Mugai Ryu Dojo is an Iaido dojo in Christchurch, New Zealand. We were established in 2006 as the only Zen Nippon Kendo Renmei oriented Iaido dojo in the South Island at the time. Our focus is primarily on Iaido; Seitei and Mugai-Ryu [our koryu], but we also do Kendo and tameshigiri as part of our training as well.
The aim and focus of training at the NZ Mugai Ryu Iaido Dojo is about approaching Budo as much as possible as adult dojos in Japan do. Budo is about training to make yourself a better person, and we use the sword techniques and training ways of the samurai to help us progress towards this goal. Iaido is about learning to be in harmony and have a correct balance in your life as much as it is about sword technique. By studying and practicing traditional Japanese sword techniques as they have been handed down, directly through generations of Samurai and now to us, we too can benefit from these teachings and philosophy.
In training you are expected to be always trying to improve yourself by doing your best and listening to instruction, respecting your sensei, senpai, the history of the art and all those around you.
In our dojo we try to balance every aspect of Iaido appropriately as it is meant to be. The sword techniques are practiced faithfully, respect is shown naturally. There is a calm atmosphere and care is taken to always be polite and show respect at all times. When you are training and when you are resting, it is important to make the discipline you learn in the dojo a part of your everyday life.
